Alexander Slatter was born in 1970 and grew up in Wensleydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. He has been a full-time artist for 7 years, and now lives and works on the Isle of Wight, England.

Highly collectable and with an increasing reputation in the UK, Alexander paints highly stylised seascapes in oil. His style can be described as contemporary romanticism, drawing on the tradition of representational landscape & seascape painting with detailed yet uniquely textural application of paint. He cites influences as diverse as Andrew Wyeth, Vaughan Williams, Piers Browne (etcher), Kit Williams, Pieter Brueghel the Elder & Andrew Haig (potter).

'Having grown up in the wildness of the Yorkshire dales and spent holidays wandering the beaches of Mull and Iona in north west Scotland, and now exploring the hidden side of the Isle of Wight, I find myself responding to the challenge of trying to paint nature with an honest crystal clarity. A combination of realism and romanticism, rich tones and the elusive feel of stillness and quiet, contrasted with the extreme melancholy of wild nature. I work in a highly representational way, however with closer inspection the paint appears gloriously abstract...'

Alexander won a music scholarship to Durham Cathedral in 1978, recording a number of Albums of Choral music, and becoming Head Chorister in 1983. His training was at Salisbury College of Art and Exeter College of Art, where he gained an honours degree. He worked as a commercial Illustrator for ten years; travelling widely to China, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Scandinavia, USA and Romania. He exhibits widely and successfully, and his work can be found in collections in Europe, USA, Australia, The Far East and Russia.
